Campbell's Soup in the USA will be a little more environmentally friendly as a result of solar power providing energy for its operations in Napoleon, Ohio.

Campbell Soup Company yesterday announced a power purchase agreement with BNB Napoleon Solar LLC for the construction of a 9.8MW PV-based solar farm on 24 acres at Campbell's largest plant.

The solar farm is expected to provide around 15 percent of the plant's electricity needs, saving the company up to $4 million over the 20 years of the agreement. The system will produce more than 14.7 million kilowatt hours of electricity during the first year of operation.

Carbon emission reductions from the clean electricity production is projected to be approximately 250,000 tonnes in total, or the equivalent of taking 2,000 cars off the road each year.

Approximately 24,000 SunPower solar panels will be used at the facility, along with Sunpower's Tracker system; which follows the sun throughout the day and angles the solar modules for optimal energy harvesting.

The project will generate around 200 local construction jobs in Ohio.?

Campbell Soup Company has committed to cutting the environmental footprint of it's product portfolio in half, as measured by water use and CO2 emissions per tonne of product produced. According to the company's 2010 corporate social responsibility report, Campbells recycled more than 84% of waste generated and invested more than $6 million in environmental sustainability projects. The company states it now produces a tonne of food with 19% less energy than it consumed 10 years ago. Campbell's products extend far beyond soup and includes well known brands such as Arnotts, V8 and Pepperidge Farm.

Cal State Bakersfield Unveils Solar Parking Canopy Wednesday, February 9th 2011 7:38 PMCalifornia State University Bakersfield recently joined a growing number of colleges and universities throughout the U.S. that have invested in solar technology: The school's dean flipped on a 1.2-megawatt solar parking canopy on its campus on Wednesday.

CSUB teamed with SunEdison to implement the photovoltaic array; through a Solar Power Service Agreement, CSUB was able to avoid all upfront costs associated with the system's installation. CSUB will maintain the renewable energy credits generated by the solar panel system and will purchase the clean energy produced from it over a period of 20 years at a fixed rate.

CSUB's president, Dr. Horace Mitchell, affirmed the school set a goal to generate 15 percent of its electricity from renewable resources. "CSUB is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and we are taking tangible steps in several areas to enhance our environmental sustainability," he said. "I'm pleased that, through our partnership with SunEdison, we will be able to exceed this goal as our new solar system will provide between 25 to 30 percent of our total energy use."

The solar panel system is forecast to generate 1.6 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy in its first year of operation.

San Diego Gas Agrees to Buy 26 Megawatts of Power From NRG's Solar Plant - Bloomberg

San Diego Gas & Electric Co., a unit of Sempra Energy, agreed to purchase all 26 megawatts of power from NRG Energy Co.’s solar power project in San Diego County.

NRG Solar’s Borrego Springs Solar project is expected to be completed in mid-2012, San Diego-based SDG&E said in a statement. Financial terms of the agreement weren’t disclosed.

The 25-year contract is the fourth SDG&E has signed in the last nine months for solar power.

Construction on the plant will begin later this year, Lori Neuman, a spokeswoman for NRG Solar, said in an interview. Borrego Springs is part of a portfolio of US Solar Ventures LLC projects NRG Solar bought from ArcLight Capital Partners in June, Neuman said.

Power from the project won’t require new transmission, Jennifer Ramp, a spokeswoman for SDG&E, said in an interview.

First Solar Signs 20-Year Pact With Edison International for Solar Power - Bloomberg

First Solar Inc., the world’s biggest maker of thin-film photovoltaic panels, said a unit of Edison International intends to buy almost three-quarters of the energy from a planned 340-megawatt solar plant in Nevada.

Southern California Edison will purchase 250 megawatts over 20 years, said Alan Bernheimer, a First Solar spokesman. The California Public Utilities Commission must approve the contract.

The First Solar plant, dubbed Silver State South, will consist of panels mounted on 2,500 acres near Primm, Nevada. It should be built and operational by 2014, with a maximum output of 250 megawatts of alternating current by 2017, the Tempe, Arizona-based company said in a statement.

The facility will dwarf First Solar’s adjacent Silver State North, which will produce 50 megawatts of alternating current. That plant will sell power to Nevada utility NV Energy Inc. under a 25-year contract signed a year ago.

First Solar declined to disclose the terms of the Edison agreement or the construction cost of Silver State South, which will connect to Rosemead, California-based Edison’s proposed Eldorado-Ivanpah 220-kilovolt transmission line.

First Solar, whose 38 percent increase this year outperformed the 23 percent gain in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index, fell 1.4 percent to $156.27 as of 12:43 p.m. in Nasdaq Stock Market trading.

Edison International was little changed at $36.99.

Senate Democrats are proposing a plan that will help Iowans produce power where they live and work.

It's a $10 million bill that would provide rebates for businesses, homes and farms that implement wind and solar energy sources.  That includes wind turbines, solar hot water systems or solar panels for heating.  Coupled with the federal tax incentives, it could bring down the cost of installing an energy efficient system by 60 percent.

Solar Power Energized By DOE's SunShot - EarthTechling

One path to boosting the adoption of renewable energy is to make fossil fuels more expensive with a carbon tax or cap-and-trade policies. Since that apparently isn’t happening any time soon in the United States, the Obama administration is taking another path: trying to push down the cost of cleaner sources. On the solar front, that effort is called “Sunshot,” and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced $27 million in SunShot projects that it hopes will help reduce the cost of photovoltaic cells by 75 percent.

Such a reduction reportedly would take the cost down to about $1 a watt, equal to around 6 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity. At that level, the DOE believes, “solar energy systems could be broadly deployed across the country.”

The department said the $27 million includes $20 million for projects intended to bolster development of “U.S. supply chains for PV manufacturing,” including companies who supply solar materials and tools. The other $7 million is being funneled into the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s PV Incubator program, which supports emerging technologies in solar power such as thin and flexible film cells.

As for specifics of the two different categories of investments, the $20 million will go towards companies like Varian Semiconductor out of Massachusetts, which will get $4.8 million to help reduce the cost of manufacturing interdigitated back contact cells, said to be the most efficient silicon solar cells on the market.

The other $7 million or so is being allocated towards start ups like Crystal Solar of California, for example, who is developing what is said to be “a new technology for the fabrication, handling, processing, and packaging of very thin single crystal silicon wafers (four times thinner than standard cells). This solution uses much less silicon, eliminates many of the wasteful and expensive wafer processing steps and addresses the problem of handling very thin wafers.” This particular organization is slated for getting up to $4 million over 18 months.

The DOE is certainly no slacker when it comes to investing in solar energy related technologies, saying that In the last ten years, it has invested more than $1 billion in solar energy research “that has been leveraged with significant private industry funding to support more than $2 billion in total solar R&D projects.” What are described as “innovations in both science and technology” have reportedly driven the cost of solar down 60 percent since 1995, and have yielded a number of so called critical breakthroughs in solar PV performance and cost.

Winter, snow, and solar panels: A mixed forecast - CNET

With many people in the U.S. bemoaning the punishing winter weather this year, solar-panel owners have their own special gripe: sun-blocking snow and ice. But at the same time, very cold temperatures have given some owners a power boost.

A thick blanket of snow can slow a solar photovoltaic (PV) array's production to a trickle. That's something I discovered two years ago when a snowy winter led me to buy a modified snow rake to remove snow from my solar panels. It's now on my list of regular winter chores.

Even with my diligence, this year has been particularly tough because of the frequency of the storms and the type of snow. Last week, New England had yet another dump of wet and sticky snow followed by icy rain, which made snow removal tricky.

Patiently letting the sun melt the snow is a perfectly reasonable thing to do, say solar industry professionals. But many people manually remove snow in winter to maximize power output. Solar panels, it turns out, really like cold weather.

At the opposite end of the country in the U.S. Southwest, frigid temperatures last week resulted in fantastically good production. The parents of my colleague Stephen Shankland have three high-end solar panels on their roof which produced just over 14.5 kilowatt-hours one day last week. That's well above the daily average for this time of year and more than my roof-full of 14 panels often does.

With the temperatures in the region not getting above zero all day, the panels generated 2 kilowatt-hours for two hours in the middle of the day, which is extremely rare. It's also a good bang for your buck when you consider many homes have limited roof space with good sun.

Although it may sound counter-intuitive, solar PV panels perform better in cold weather and similarly, performance degrades in high heat. Amy Beaudet, who has a solar array in Massachusetts, calculates that the maximum wattage of her array in Massachusetts is up to 25 percent higher in the winter than in the warmer months.

The technical reason for the power increase is that the voltage of solar panels increases as temperatures go down, said Beaudet who does technical sales at renewable-energy e-commerce outlet AltE Store. The higher voltage (you can think of it as pressure), combined with the same current from the panels as during warm weather, results in higher wattage, she explained.

The tilt of panels also figures in winter versus summer production. People who use solar panels in an off-grid situation typically angle the panels to better take advantage of the winter sun because of the shorter days, she said.

Still learning
Back at my house, snow removal has become a bit of a preoccupation for me on sunny days after it snows. And I'm planning on modifying my roof rake again to better ensure I don't damage the surface.

With my 20-foot snow rake, I can only reach the bottom one third of the panels. So my strategy is to pull away what I can and wait for the sun to do its thing. Once more dark-colored panel is exposed, more current starts flowing and the rest of the panels heat up.

Clumps of snow tend to slide down from the higher panels and I scrape those chunks off as they come. It's not unusual to hear a large thump from sliding snow on sunny days after a snow storm, something I try to remember when I walk beneath them so I don't get clobbered.

The snow rake I bought at my local hardware store is made of aluminum. So to ensure that the hard head does not strike or scratch the solar panels (and generally keep metal away from electricity generation), I screwed on a strip of door weatherstripping to the edge of the rake head, which means that a strip of nylon is gliding along the panels. Now, I'm planning to screw soft pipe wrapping, the kind you insulate hot water heat pipes with, along the edge.

Often, solar-panel owners use some sort of squeegee-like contraption to take snow off, said AltE Store's Beaudet. A friend of mine with newly installed panels bought a snow rake with a plastic head which allows him to push the snow off from inside the house. Another product called the Sno Knife, which has a flat plastic head designed to work in different types of snow, shouldn't damage glass-covered solar panels, according to the company.

The story for solar hot water panels or tubes is very different. The copper inside solar hot water panels gathers heat relatively quickly and the snow tends to melt quickly, Beaudet said.

One technical advance which is helping make shading of solar PV panels less disruptive is microinverters. Traditionally, an array of panels is wired together and connected to a single inverter, a box about the size of a PC that converts the direct current to household alternating current.

One downside of this approach is that if one panel is shaded by leaves or snow, production of the entire string is compromised. Microinverters do the DC-to-AC conversion on each panel so if one panel is blocked, it doesn't affect the others.

Of course, removing snow assumes you can actually get access to a roof. Often, people simply just wait for the sun and wind to do the work for you. And if it's icy, trying to scrape it off is not a great idea, said Beaudet.

In my case, I popped in and out a few times on Friday in an attempt to speed up the melting with an occasional raking. I wanted to avoid a chunk of snow sliding down and freezing in place when the cold weather set in for the night. It worked: by the afternoon, the panels were cleared. Just in time for night fall--and the next forecasted storm.

A building in downtown Anchorage, Alaska, during the 1950s will soon be outfitted with solar panels, making it one of the few clean energy projects of its type in the entire state, according to a report from the Anchorage Daily News. The building will be outfitted with 64 solar panels on its south side, replacing a number of unsightly metal panels.

The project may also have been driven by the fact that a number of the building's tenants are conservation groups with a particular interest in reducing the state's dependence on fossil fuel, the report said. It made the decision to retrofit the wall, which needed replacing anyway, with solar panels an easy one for owner Steve Zelener.

The project will cost about $100,000, but qualified for a 30 percent tax credit from the federal government, the report said. It will generate between 5 and 10 percent of the building's energy needs.

Many companies have turned to solar power to defray energy costs in recent years, as there may be a significant return on their initial investment. SDG&E makes wind, solar deals - San Diego Union Tribune

San Diego Gas & Electric has signed deals to buy solar and wind power from the deserts east of San Diego.

One involves getting the full output of a 315-megawatt wind farm on federal land planned for in western Imperial County.

The other is with what's planned as the largest solar farm in San Diego County, on 300 acres in Borrego Springs. That would supply 26 megawatts, or enough for about 9,000 homes.

"SDG&E has worked diligently on developing local renewable contracts that will provide clean renewable power to help satisfy our customers’ long-term energy needs," said Jim Avery, the SDG&E executive in charge of making sure there's enough power.

SDG&E and other big, for-profit utilities are required by the state to get a third of the power they supply by 2020 from renewable sources such as wind, solar and geothermal.

The company says it has signed three other contracts for power from renewable sources in the last nine months.

The wind contract is for power to be produced by the Ocotillo Wind Energy Facility, formerly known as the Ocotillo Express, about 25 miles west of El Centro.

The company building that project hopes to break ground by the end of the year and begin supplying power to SDG&E by the middle of next year.

SDG&E says that power will come to San Diego over the Sunrise Powerlink, a controversial transmission line it is now building.

The $500 million Ocotillo wind farm is undergoing environmental review. If fully built, it would put 244 turbines on federal land, mostly north of Interstate 8 just east of San Diego County.

"It's an ideal opportunity to put renewables onto Sunrise Powerlink," said Glen Hodges, a spokesman for Pattern Energy, the Texas company developing it.

The solar contract is with NRG Solar, and will increase the amount of solar power generated in San Diego County by 25 percent, SDG&E said.

Desert solar and wind projects are controversial with conservationists who see them as forever changing fragile environments.

Both contracts require approval from the California Public Utilities Commission.

Freehold Regional School Board Considering Solar Panels, Capital Upgrades - Freehold Patch

The Freehold Regional High School District is considering $57.7 million in capital improvements to address the long-range facility needs for the district, with a bond referendum among the options available to the school board as it considers how to pay for the improvements and upgrades.

The capital proposal, presented by board secretary and assistant superintendent Sean Boyce at the Jan. 31 meeting of the Board of Education, includes $27.3 million for projects such as roofing repairs and window replacements; $2.1 million in energy efficiency improvements; and $28.3 million to outfit the schools with solar energy panels.

“The energy efficiency improvements are not required to keep the doors open but they make sense since the cost will be recovered through energy savings,” Boyce said.

The solar energy portion of the proposal was also not as immediate an imperative as the capital projects but would provide opportunities for a return on investment, according to Boyce. Pursuing solar energy options would result in a 33 percent reduction on electric bills and allow the board to receive solar renewable energy credits through the federal government’s funding incentive program. Those credits could then be sold on the open market with the resulting revenue returned to the district.

The lowered 2 percent state-mandated cap on school district spending increases has made it increasingly difficult for school boards to draft spending plans that include costly line items such as capital improvements, Boyce said.

“You don’t want projects to come at the expense of programs and services,” Boyce said. “We need to look at other options for maintaining and upgrading our facilities.”

Among those options are a bond referendum and a public/private partnership to finance solar panels, rather than simple line items in the 2011-12 budget.

By putting the capital planning proposal up for a bond referendum, the board would be in a position to maximize the financial benefits of the solar energy plan and state aid, Boyce said.

Lisa A. Gorab, an attorney from Wilentz, Goldman & Spitzer who consulted on the proposal, said all projects included in the proposal would be eligible for state aid if approved through a public bond referendum. Gorab estimated state aid for the life of the bond would be 34 percent.

Board member Harold “Heshy” Moses questioned whether the district could depend on the estimated 34 percent state aid, given New Jersey's fiscal woes and monetary cuts to local school districts. 

“I don’t trust [the current administration] when it comes to public education,” Moses said.

Gorab acknowledged that state aid is crucial toward acquiring financial benefits via referendum.“The state has never underfunded for the length of issue for funded bonds. From 2000 to 2010, you got 40 percent in state aid. Last year, the district got 34 percent,” Gorab said. “We should know at the end of February where they’re going to fund aid for capital projects.”

The other financing option would have the district enter into a power purchasing agreement, Boyce said. A private energy company would pay for the solar panels and the roofing improvements associated with erecting the panels.

“The [solar] system would be owned by the private entity, and the district would purchase energy at a reduced rate,” Boyce said. The private company would also receive the financial benefit of selling the solar credits.

To pay for the remaining capital improvement needs, the district would enter into a five-year capital lease, and this portion of the project would be eligible for state aid, Boyce said. This financing option would give the board control over the spending and would not need to go to referendum, Boyce said. However, the financing option would ultimately cost the district $1.1 million per year over 25 years, while the bond referendum would result in a $200,000 net gain, he noted.

In the next month, Boyce said the district will analyze the power purchasing agreements that are being solicited; finalize the scope and time-line of the projects; meet with municipal planning boards in the towns where the high schools are located; and prepare a community education plan to explain 2012 capital planning proposal to the public.
